Veterinary Imaging Market: From Conventional X-Ray to Intelligent Diagnostics

Veterinary care is moving toward a more technology-driven model, and diagnostic imaging is becoming an increasingly important part of that transition. The global Veterinary Imaging Market was valued at USD 2.2 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 4.0 billion by 2033, expanding at a CAGR of 7.8% from 2026 to 2033.

Behind this growth is a combination of rising pet ownership, increasing awareness of animal healthcare, expanding pet insurance coverage, technological innovation, and the growing need to identify diseases at an earlier stage. Imaging is no longer limited to basic radiography. Veterinary practices are increasingly adopting ultrasound, CT, MRI, digital systems, and AI-supported software to improve diagnostic decision-making.

What Is Changing in Veterinary Diagnostics?

The evolution of veterinary imaging is being shaped by two parallel developments: better imaging equipment and smarter interpretation of imaging data.

Artificial intelligence is becoming particularly significant. AI-based radiology and imaging software can support automated evaluation of veterinary radiological parameters, assist with image analysis, and improve the efficiency of clinical workflows.

Recent developments demonstrate this shift. In December 2025, Rosetta Inc., a member of the Metalial Group, launched the MetaReal Vet Equip AI agent, designed to analyze veterinary clinic requirements and predict demand for equipment. Earlier, in April 2024, MiReye Imaging introduced veterinary X-ray machines incorporating AI for disease diagnosis.

These developments indicate that innovation is extending beyond hardware into software-enabled diagnostic ecosystems.

The Numbers Behind the Market

USD 2.2 billion: Market value in 2025

USD 2.4 billion: Estimated market size in 2026

USD 4.0 billion: Projected market size by 2033

7.8%: Expected CAGR, 2026–2033

38.8%: North America's revenue share in 2025

The market's expansion also reflects increasing demand for diagnostic solutions capable of supporting both routine and complex veterinary care.

Why Imaging Demand Is Increasing

The growing prevalence of zoonotic diseases is an important factor behind the need for effective animal diagnostics. According to the source data, 60% of infectious diseases occurring globally are reported to have zoonotic origins, while 75% of the 30 new pathogens detected among humans during the last 30 years were of animal origin.

This creates a stronger need for detailed evaluation of animal health. Veterinary professionals increasingly rely on imaging to investigate internal conditions, support treatment decisions, and identify abnormalities that may otherwise be difficult to detect.

Pet ownership is another major contributor. As animals increasingly become part of households, owners are showing greater willingness to invest in healthcare services. Higher healthcare spending and broader pet insurance coverage can make diagnostic imaging more accessible.

Small Animals Create a Large Demand Base

Small animals represented 51.5% of the market in 2025, with dogs forming an important part of imaging demand. The expanding pet population, increasing healthcare costs, improved insurance coverage, and rising prevalence of painful and inflammatory conditions are supporting adoption.

At the same time, large-animal imaging is gaining importance. Horses and livestock require diagnostic technologies for musculoskeletal conditions, reproductive assessments, lameness evaluations, and internal health monitoring. Portable imaging equipment is particularly valuable in these settings because examinations can be performed directly at farms, stables, or other field locations.

X-Ray Remains Fundamental

X-ray accounted for 37.8% of revenue in 2025, maintaining its position as the leading imaging type. Its broad use across orthopedics, dentistry, and other veterinary applications, combined with affordability and insurance coverage, supports continued demand.

Yet the market is not standing still. Video endoscopy is projected to register the fastest growth, supported by its use as a less invasive alternative to surgical procedures. Meanwhile, MRI, CT, and advanced ultrasound are becoming increasingly valuable for complex diagnostic cases.

Orthopedics and Oncology Open New Opportunities

Orthopedics and traumatology represented 37.6% of the market in 2025. Equine orthopedic conditions are particularly important because high-resolution imaging can help identify joint and skeletal abnormalities and guide treatment planning.

Oncology represents another strong growth area. Ultrasound and CT can support cancer staging and help identify suspected thoracic or abdominal cancers. The growing need for earlier and more accurate cancer assessment in pets is therefore creating additional demand for advanced imaging capabilities.

Regional Growth Is Taking Two Different Paths

North America led the global market with a 38.8% revenue share in 2025, supported by high pet ownership, advanced veterinary infrastructure, and strategic activity among market participants. The U.S. accounted for the largest country share.

Asia Pacific, however, is expected to record the fastest CAGR through 2033. Increasing pet adoption, rising awareness of animal health, growing veterinary expenditure, and a large livestock population are contributing to the region's expansion.

India is also becoming an important growth market. The launch of a dedicated small animal hospital by Tata Trusts in Mumbai is expected to increase demand for advanced imaging technologies and support wider adoption through specialized care, training, and collaboration.

As veterinary healthcare becomes more sophisticated, imaging is moving from a supporting diagnostic function toward a central component of precision animal care.
